One of Uttarakhand's hidden gems is Bali Pass, this offbeat trek is located in the Garhwal mountain region of the Himalayas. Even though Bali Pass isn’t a very popular destination among mountaineers or trekkers it still takes you to various popular locations, such as Ruinsara Tal, Har Ki Dun Valley, Osla Village, and the mystical Yamunotri Dham, one of the four holy Dhaams. Another intriguing fact that many people are unaware of is that the Bali Pass hike connects the Har Ki Dun Valley to the Ruinsara Valley and gives breathtaking vistas of mountain peaks such as Bandarpoonch, Swargrohini, and many other Garhwal Himalayan peaks.

Just under 5000 meters in elevation from sea level, Bali pass offers a great experience of Remote Himalayan villages, alpine forests, meadows, lakes, and steep slopes of Ice and snow for trekking enthusiasts.

Dehradun to Sankri (1920 M)

The trek to Bali pass starts from Sankri, and we would start early in the morning from Dehradun. Sankri is a very small establishment but a scenic one located in Govind Pashu national park in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, total distance by road is 195 km from Dehradun, and it may take upto 7-8 hours’ drive to reach Sankri. Stay will be arranged at a Guest house/Homestay, and here we will introduce you with our team.

Sankri (1920 M) to Taluka (2107 M) 12 Kms by Road, Taluka to Seema (2560 M) 12 km trek

Early in the morning, we will drive from Sankri to Taluka in a cab. The drive would take upto 1 hour for us to reach taluka. Taluka is the starting point of our trek. We will stop at Taluka for our breakfast, we will start trekking for Seema campsite on a fairly even trail through thick forests of chestnuts, walnuts, willows, chinars and various types of conifer trees. There are two ways to reach Seema via two different routes that meet at the village of Gangaar, depending on the combined decision of the team we will take any of the route. On reaching the camp we will have some activities around the place before retiring to our camps.

Seema Camp (2560 M) to Rainbasera (3086 M) - 9 km trek

Today as well we will follow the Supin river. Our first milestone would be Debshu Bugyal, this meadow offers a magnificent view of Kala Nag or Black Peak. Following the trail and crossing Debshu Bugyal, we will have to descend through the trail that leads into the forest with loose stones and sandy path until we reach the river. We will cross the Supin river using a bridge and now we will again ascend with the Supin river flowing now on our right side. Some of the sections on this part of the trail are very slippery and can be really tricky to compensate. Trek along the river until we reach our campsite, which is by the side of the river. Overnight stay in Camps.

Rainbasera (3086 M) to Ruinsara Tal (3565 M) - 7.5 km trek

Day 04: Rainbasera (3086 M) to Ruinsara Tal (3565 M) - 7.5 km trek.

Today we have relatively more elevation to gain, and our next destination is Ruinsara Tal. Ruinsara is a beautiful lake surrounded by meadows and rhododendron bushes. The campsite is a beautiful site as one side of the camps is the tiny lake of Ruinsara and on the other side is raging Supin River. On the south-west side from Ruinsara Tal is Yamuna Kanta, a very difficult pass which takes you to Yamunotri. To the east side you can see the majestic Bandarpunch Peak (6,387 m), Dhumdhar Kandi (5,873 m), and Kala Nag (6,387m), White Peak (6,102m) to the south-east.

Ruinsara Tal (3565 M) to Odari (4008 M) - 4 km trek

Today is a relatively short and easy trek of approx. 4 km. Initially we would have to descend down to Supin river through the dense high-altitude vegetation and bushes. Crossing the river using a bridge, we will have to ascend to a small meadow and then head along the river. Continuing on the trail we will soon reach a point from where the valley changes its shape and a km from here will lead us to Odari. There are some very old mythical beliefs attached to Odari, it is believed that Bali(Mahabharata) once lived in the cave of Odari. The views from the campsite is breath-taking. In the North East we can see the crystal-clear view of Swargarohini 1. Stay in camps.

Odari (4008 M) to Base Camp (4678 M) - 3.25 km trek

This is the shortest day distance wise in our whole trek, however it is not at all an easy one as we have to climb a very steep section, which at certain points goes well over a 60-degree inclination angle of the mountain slope and is full of loose rocks. This day is crucial as we will be camping at a very high altitude and to avoid any kind of problems and issues related to AMS, our team will guide you with different aspects of high altitude survival. It is important to keep yourself active & hydrated at all times. The temperature is also a very important factor here as it may go sub-zero and everything becomes difficult at such low temperatures. Overnight stay in camps.

Base Camp (4678 M) to Lower Dhamni (3415 M) via Bali Pass (4950 M) - 10 km trek

Today we will start early and will try to walk slowly because we will be crossing the Bali Pass (4950 m) and reach our next campsite, Lower Dhamni. Today's trek will be long and the most challenging one. The trail up to Bali pass is full of snow and it will require using the techniques that will be taught to the team by our guides and trek leaders. It may take around 2-3 hours to reach the pass from the base camp. Once we climb the pass, the 360-degree view of peaks such as Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, Garhwal ranges and the Yamunotri valley is worth all the efforts made to reach the pass. The descent down the pass is through a nearly vertical slope full of scree and big stones. After this extremely challenging descent and crossing the goat village, rest and we will resume our trail to our campsite.

Lower Dhamni (3415 M) to Jaan Ki Chatti (2650 M) via Yamunotri - 9.5 km trek

This will be our last day on trail, the initial trail is through the dense region of forest. The gradient for four and half km is a mild ascent up to Yamunotri. It may take around 2 hours to reach Yamunotri. After reaching Yamunotri the dip in the sulphur hot water springs of Yamunotri is a treat to tired muscles. From Yamunotri we will take the regular pilgrims route to Jaan Ki Chatti which is around 5 km. Overnight stay at the guest house/hotel.
