Gangotri- the holy shrine of Hindus, is the starting point of this amazing trail that takes you to the foot of mighty Mt. Shivling (6543 m). It is one of the most famous destinations for not just adventurers but for pilgrims and devotees too. The trail is located completely inside the Gangotri National Park and goes along with the Bhagirathi river up to Gaumukh, which is the snout of the Gangotri glacier and the birthplace of the Bhagirathi river. Situated at an elevation of 4381 meters, Tapovan offers a stunning view of Bhagirathi peaks, Mt. Shivling, Mt. Meru, Mt. Thelu and many other high rises, which makes it a must-do experience for Photographers and mountain lovers and even beginners in the Himalayas who are still waiting for first 4000m experience.

Haridwar to Gangotri (3100 m)

Our Journey will start early in the morning at Haridwar, the road is in good condition and the travel time would be around 10 hours to reach Gangotri. The Famous pilgrimage site of Hindu religion, Gangotri Shrine is located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. It is the starting point of our trek. Accommodation in hotel/guest house.

Gangotri (3100 m) to Chirwaasa (3560 m) - 9 km trek

The journey on foot starts today as we head along the Ganges river further into the Gangotri valley. After breakfast we will follow a trail that stays on the right bank in the direction of flow of Ganges, and approx. 800 meters onto it we will cross the check post of Gangotri national park. The trail is quite easy to walk on and has a very gradual elevation gain. Chirwaasa is a small river bank forest on an uneven flat surface. The name means land of Chir(pine) trees. Setup camp before we explore the region.

Chirwaasa (3560 m) to Bhoj-wasa (3793 m) - 4 km trek

This day’s walk is another easy one in terms of elevation gain. With an easy start in the morning after breakfast, we will continue onwards to Bhoj-wasa, the peaks of Gangotri 1,2,3 will start dominating the view and the valley starts to widen up a little with more moraines replacing the forests. Bhoj-wasa means the land of Bhoj patra (birch tree). The camp location is on the bank of Ganges and we will be accommodating in camps.

Bhoj-wasa (3793 m) to Gaumukh (4100 m) to Tapovan (4456 m) - 8 km trek

Today we will start as early as possible, as we will be crossing over Gangotri glacier and to make sure we cross it while the conditions are still hard on the surface of the glacier. Initially the trail to Gaumukh will be an easy walk and some moraines until we cross the Gangotri glacier. It will take us 2 hours to reach Gaumukh, which is the snout of Gangotri glacier and Bhagirathi river comes into existence from this point. After crossing Gangotri glacier which is completely covered with debris, rocks and moraines, we will climb a steep ascent to our camp at Tapovan. At this point some of the majestic peaks of Himalayas reveal themselves such as mt. Shivling, mt. Meru, mt. Bhagirathi 1,2,3, mt. Thelu and many more.
