Kang Yatse II, a twin-peak mountain in the Northwest region of the Himalayas stands at the edge of Markha Valley. This mountain has 2 summits standing at an altitude of 6400m(I) & 6250m(II). Kang Yatse I is a tough summit to climb and requires seasonal mountaineering skills & gears, however, its twin peak Kang Yatse II offers a chance to summit the peak with comparatively less experience and skills. Due to its location, this mountain offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience as the approach to the mountain allows one to acclimatize thoroughly while crossing the high-altitude landscapes of Leh. If you’re lucky enough you might see the mountain ranges of Zanskar & Karakoram which would allow you to stop K2, Gasherbrum massif, Broad peak and various other 7000ers in the distance from the top of the Kang Yatse II.

Arrive in Leh (3567 m), Rest and Acclimatization

The first day is for rest and acclimatization due to significant elevation gain by reaching Leh which is well above 3500 metres from sea level. You may explore the local market of Leh and prepare yourself for the coming journey. Accommodation in guest house/hotel.

Acclimatization in Leh

This day is a very crucial part of our journey, we will help you explore the cultural and natural beauty of Leh. Leh is a hub for almost all things happening in Ladakh and also all major expeditions begin from Leh itself. Leh is also very rich in its culture and dozens of monasteries and ancient temples are there which makes this place unique in terms of exploration for different individuals. Leh town is a beautiful circuit of trials for someone who loves to walk around.

Markha to Thachungste (4100 m)

The trail from Markha village continues past an old stone-mill, a ruined castle can be spotted and the auspicious monastery of Techa, which proudly perches upon a cliff that looms above Markha. The path then intersects the river many times as we reach the end of the valley. After leaving the village of Umlung, we will have our first view of mighty Mt. Kang Yatse I (6400 m), which will dominate the view the entire time on the trail. After having a short break for lunch in the village of Hankar, we will continue onward to the lovely green pasture of Thachungste.

Thachungtse to Nimaling (4700 m)

Today the trail will be a mix of gradual and steep ascends as it will lead us up to the beautiful plateau of Nimaling, where the people of the Markha Valley bring their herds to graze during the summer months. At 4700 m, Nimaling is one of the most beautiful campsites on the climb. The spectacular views of the peaks of Kang Yatse twins to the right is always a pleasure to gaze at.

Climbing Kang Yatse II (6250 m) to BC

Today we will make our way to the top of the summit of this amazing mountain. We will start our climb just after midnight with artificial lights through the scree which will soon enter the snow fields on the slope of the mountain and make way to the top of the ridge on the right side of the camps. The path from here is a mix of moraines and snow until it meets a glacier on the north face of the mountain. Traversing across the face to the ridge on the northwest side we will reach the shoulder of the mountain from where the ridge itself is the way to the summit of the mountain. The attempt to reach the summit by sunrise on the horizon would be our best chance of experiencing the climb and its rewards. After spending some time on the summit, we will descend back to BC and enjoy our success over brunch!
