Yunam Peak is a magnificent high-altitude mountain, standing tall at 6,111m above sea level. The climb to the summit of this mountain is fairly easy compared to other mountains with the same altitude as it is behind the prominence in the Lahaul district of Himachal Pradesh which in itself stands at an altitude of 5000m above sea level. The climb demands a trek through snow-covered terrain that takes one to the remote location which is a perfect blend of adventure & mesmerizing landscapes. The summit of Yunam has a great vantage point for an outstanding view of the C.B. Range and Mulkilla Range.

The location is closely situated near Baralacha La, which is the highest motorable road in the Lahaul district. The road journey from Manali to Bharatpur is one of the most amazing road journeys in the world, that goes through rugged landscapes of semi-arid glaciated deserts. Even though the climb to the summit is moderately easy it still demands a lot of physical & mental fitness to climb the mountain’s peak.

Arrival at Manali

The day is reserved for introduction to the team, briefing sessions, load sorting and acclimatization. Our team will welcome you at the hotel/guest house, we would expect you to reach Manali before afternoon on this day.

Manali to Jispa (3212 m) Approx 5hr drive

We will start early and board our transport for the drive, the road goes along Beas river initially before we take the tunnel to reach the other side of Rohtang La. Now the road is Leh-Manali highway and mostly low in vegetation yet the high rising mountains of this landscape never fail to amaze. Jispa is a small village situated well over 3000 meters and is our first halt on the way to Yunam peak.

Bharatpur (4508 m) to Yunam Base camp (5210 m)- 5 km trek

This is an important day and it will be started early as the ascent is steep and the whole distance will take time to cover. The path initially is through moraines and sharp edged rocks and scree spread all over, soon the trail will be covered with thick snow patches which is generally hard and easy to navigate with the use of added traction to the boots. The campsite is near a small high altitude lake and the Peak can be seen clearly from here.

Yunam Base camp (5210 m) to Yunam Peak (6111 m) and back- 6.5 km trek

We will start in the night on the moraine field that we explored the last day, the trail is a little tricky due to the moraines and it will be a slow passage for all. The path is fairly steep and has a lot of snow sections and rocky terrain mixed in. Just before the shoulder of the mountain the path gets really steep with a wall of approx. 70 degrees inclination angle. We would be using the ropes depending on the snow conditions. The view from the summit is mesmerizing as the whole Lahual and Spiti can be seen spread across the landscape. After some time on top we will trace back our steps to base camp.
