Right in the middle of the Gangotri National Park, Vasuki Tal is a sacred lake situated at an altitude of 4135m. This lake is surrounded by astonishingly beautiful high mountains of the Himalayan giants such as Mt. Shivling, Mt. Meru, Mt. Thelu and many others. Vasuki Tal has also been mentioned in ancient Hindu scriptures Lord Vishnu took a bath in it at the time of Raksha Bandhan which purified this lake. This trek has been graded as moderate to challenging as it involves crossing multiple glaciers & boulders. The Vasuki Tal Trek route passes via Tapovan, a stunning alpine meadow with spiritual significance for Sanatanis, and Gaumukh, the source of the powerful river Ganga. This walk provides hikers with a rare opportunity to experience nature at its finest because it is still relatively unexplored. You must have some past experience with Himalayan trekking in order to complete the Vasuki Tal Trek.

Rishikesh to Gangotri

The journey will start at Rishikesh/Haridwar in the morning, the road is in good condition and the travel time would be around 10 hours to reach Gangotri, The Famous pilgrimage site of Sanatan religion, Gangotri Shrine is located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. It is the starting point of our trek. Accommodation in hotel/guest house.

Gangotri to Bhoj-wasa (3793m) via Chirbasa (3600m) 13 kms trek

Starting from Gangotri we will follow a trail which is partially perched and walk on a very gradual traverse towards Chirbasa, the entire way till Chirbasa is on the left bank of Bhagirathi river. We may have our packed lunch at Chirbasa. Post lunch we will head to Bhoj-wasa which is another 5 km of very east trail. The terrain, after crossing Chirbasa, becomes really barren as it is a wide-open valley. In the end you will descend a little bit to Bhoj-wasa to reach the campsite

Bhoj-wasa to Gaumukh (3890m) to Tapovan (4463m)- 08 Kms Trek

After breakfast we will head towards Gaumukh (3890mt), the snout of Gangotri glacier. Gaumukh is a huge cave opening under Gangotri glacier. The trail after Gaumukh is full of scree and loose boulders, also some rock fall sections. The trek from Gaumukh to Tapovan is a steep ascent, and as we climb the very unstable part of the climb over the Gangotri glacier the view of the peaks becomes clearer. Tapovan is also known as the base camp of the Shivling peak. This place is home to a huge number of wildlife including both plants and animals. On one side of the campsite are the Bhagirathi I, II, III. and on the other Mt. Shivling which is ever dominating the whole landscape, and the mighty Meru in the distance.

Tapovan to Gangotri Glacier to Nandanvan (4340 m)- 04 km trek

Today we will start early & head straight into the Gangotri Glacier. We will spend some time to explore the gangotri glacier and then head straight to Nandanvan using the newly made path over the Gangotri glacier, however if the conditions of the route are not suitable to cross, then we will take the old route by going back to Gaumukh and staying on the right trail next to the Gangotri glacier. The glacier is situated between two ranges and the landslides in the unstable lower section of Gangotri range. It makes a layer of rocky moraine on the ice of the glacier which makes it easy to compensate for ice of glacier. There are huge crevasses gaping on the surface and scree and moraines makes it a challenge. After walking for about a kilometre there is a very steep ascent to reach Nandanvan. The evenings at Nandanvan are mostly windy and cold.

Nandanvan to Vasuki Tal (4980 m) to Nandanvan- 12 kms Trek

Morning trek after breakfast we will move along with Chaturangi Glacier to reach the tiny lake in the giant Gangotri Valley named Vasuki Tal, it is also the base for Mt. Satopanth and Mt. Vasuki Parbat and hanging glaciers of both these mountains feed the lake. The lake has a magnificent beauty around it as the high rising towers of Himalayas sit like they are guarding this small source of freshwater. The trek is not very steep all the time but some sections can really take you to the limits. After we have explored the area we will head back on the same trail to reach back to Nandanvan. Overnight stay in tents.
